Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has hosted a prominent delegation from Huawei Middle East, led by Steven Yi, the President of Huawei Middle East and Central Asia. The purpose of the meeting was to further advance the strategic partnership between DEWA and Huawei.
Over the years, this collaboration between DEWA and Huawei has yielded significant achievements in areas such as digital transformation, the exchange of international solutions and practices, innovation, smart grids, automation, cloud platforms, Artificial Intelligence, data security, and big data management, among others, according to WAM.
The aim of the cooperation is to develop new technologies and solutions that enhance efficiency and sustainability in the electricity and water sectors, improve user experience, and deliver more efficient, safe, and sustainable services.
Additionally, the partnership between DEWA and Huawei encompasses various future projects, including Big Data Management, Perimeter and ICT Infrastructure Security, Cybersecurity, and Information Security. A joint team has been established to initiate pilot programs that utilize the latest technologies, focusing on developing new initiatives. These initiatives encompass research and development, new customer services, and promptly actionable vital projects.
During the meeting, Al Tayer emphasized the alignment of DEWA’s plans with significant government strategies, namely the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and the UAE Strategy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. These strategies aim to develop an integrated AI system and strengthen the UAE’s global position by fostering a competitive knowledge-based economy driven by innovation and future technological applications.
The progress of joint projects between DEWA and Huawei was also discussed during the meeting. This includes the development of Moro’s green data centers, which is a subsidiary of Digital DEWA. In February 2023, the world’s largest solar-powered data center, recognized by the Guinness World Records, was inaugurated. Situated at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park globally, the Uptime TIER III-Certified data center operates entirely on renewable energy, with a capacity exceeding 100 megawatts (MW) and an area exceeding 16,000 square meters.
“DEWA represents two of UAE’s key priorities, digital transformation and sustainability. The company’s investment in ICT infrastructure powered by renewable energy establishes the company not just as a leader in digital transformation in the utility sector but also as a trailblazer in energy transition. We at Huawei are aligned with these objectives and are proud to partner with DEWA in their development of eco-friendly ICT infrastructure. Green and low carbon ICT infrastructure enables each watt to support more computing power and connections enabling DEWA to create new value and deliver first-class customer experience,” said Steven Yi.
The green data center, operated by Moro, provides digital products and services that leverage Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, including cloud services, the Internet of Things (IoT), and AI. This state-of-the-art facility allows global hyper-scalers to access computing capabilities that are completely carbon-free.
The meeting was attended by key individuals, including Marwan bin Haidar, the Executive Vice President of Innovation and the Future at DEWA, Mohammad bin Sulaiman, the CEO of Data Hub Integrated Solutions (Moro), and Rashid Alahmedi, the Chief Operating Officer of InfraX.
