Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the CEO of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), has been chosen as the Chair Elect of the Board of Directors for the World Nuclear Association (WNA). This appointment paves the way for Al Hammadi to become the Chairman of WNA in 2024.
The WNA is headquartered in London and aims to support the global development of nuclear energy programs, with its members responsible for 70% of the world’s nuclear energy generation. The WNA’s management and policies are overseen by a board of 20 directors elected by the members, including Al Hammadi, who was elected as a director in April 2022, according to WAM.
Al Hammadi said, “Receipt of the role of chair elect for such an important organisation as the World Nuclear Association has been made possible because of the UAE’s visionary leadership to transform its energy sector. Through their ongoing support in developing the UAE Peaceful Nuclear Energy Programme, the UAE model for nuclear energy has been hailed a global success story. It offers a new blueprint for other nations that choose to pursue this vital source of clean electricity to decarbonize their energy portfolios, as nations around the world work to drive energy security and energy sustainability in parallel, in pursuit of Net Zero 2050.”
The selection of Al Hammadi for the WNA Board Chair highlights the UAE’s continued dedication to collaborating with the global nuclear energy community to share best practices, knowledge, and experiences. The UAE has set a high global standard for nuclear energy projects, with the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant widely acknowledged as one of the most advanced nuclear facilities in the world, delivering top-notch safety, quality, and transparency.
As the world faces an energy crisis, Barakah serves as a successful model for other countries seeking to diversify their energy portfolio. With three units currently in operation, Barakah is ensuring energy security, fueling sustainable economic growth, driving innovation, and contributing to the UAE’s Net Zero strategy by 2050. Al Hammadi’s role as WANO President, which he secured during the WANO Biennial General Meeting in Prague, Czech Republic in October 2022, further underscores his leadership in the nuclear energy sector.
