According to the Ministry of Energy, Saudi Arabia has achieved the top position globally in the growth of global renewable energy production within just two years of the launch of the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The ministry highlighted the progress made by the Kingdom after the SGI’s two-year journey, stating that Saudi Arabia has moved up 10 places in the overall Green Future Index rankings and now ranks first in the Arab world and 20th globally in the CO2 emission growth indicator.
Additionally, the SGI has led to the introduction of 17 renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 13.76 gigawatts, which are expected to save approximately 23.1 million tons of CO2 equivalent annually, according to Saudi Gazette.
Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans for the world’s biggest clean hydrogen production hub, which is projected to have a capacity of 250,000 tons per year by 2060. In addition, the country has initiated the first phase of the Middle East’s largest Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) hub in Jubail, which has a capacity of 9 million tons annually and is expected to have a maximum capacity of 44 million tons per year by 2035.
The Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) and Middle East Green Initiative (MGI), launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021, are aimed at promoting environmental sustainability in Saudi Arabia in alignment with the Vision 2030 plan.
