Dubai is set to witness the commercial takeoff of electric air taxis developed by Joby Aviation before the end of 2026, according to Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) Chairman Mattar Al Tayer. Moreover, this initiative represents a key milestone in integrating advanced aerial mobility into the emirate’s transport ecosystem.
The first crewed test flight of Joby Aviation’s fully electric air taxi occurred in June 2025, demonstrating the aircraft’s operational capabilities and readiness for urban deployment. Additionally, the move aligns with Dubai’s strategy to introduce sustainable, innovative transport solutions.
Joby Aviation’s eVTOL capabilities
The Joby Aerial Taxi, a flagship electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, can cover distances of up to 160 kilometres while reaching speeds of 320 km/h. Furthermore, its zero-emission design ensures eco-friendly operations, and noise levels remain sufficiently low for dense urban areas.
Joby Aviation secured exclusive rights to operate aerial taxis in Dubai in early 2024 through a six-year contract with the RTA. As a result, the city is positioned to pioneer electric air mobility in the region, creating a new benchmark for urban transport innovation.
Advancing urban air mobility in Dubai
The air taxi rollout will complement Dubai’s broader transportation network, offering faster travel times and alternative transit options. Moreover, the initiative underscores the emirate’s commitment to sustainability and advanced technology adoption in public infrastructure.
By 2026, the integration of eVTOL services is expected to enhance connectivity, reduce road congestion, and support Dubai’s vision of a smart, sustainable, and future-ready city.
