Sharjah has approved plans to develop a new exhibition and convention centre at a total cost of AED 500 million ($136.2 million), with delivery targeted by 2027. Moreover, the project follows the acquisition of a strategically located plot of land near the Emirates–Al Dhaid–Khorfakkan roads for AED 146 million ($39.8 million). As a result, the emirate aims to expand its cultural and events infrastructure while improving accessibility for major international exhibitions.
The announcement was made by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who confirmed that designs are nearing completion and construction will begin immediately. Additionally, the project is scheduled for delivery within two years, with work planned for completion within 22 months. The official opening is targeted for November 2027, in time to host the 46th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair.
Sharjah International Book Fair relocation plans
From the 46th edition onward, the Sharjah International Book Fair will relocate from its current venue to the new exhibitions and conventions centre. Therefore, the move is expected to support the fair’s continued growth while easing logistical and traffic pressures associated with large-scale attendance.
Strategic site selection and transport access
Sheikh Dr Sultan explained that the project was initially planned for a site adjacent to Sharjah Mosque. However, extensive excavation requirements at that location prompted a reassessment. Consequently, alternative plots along the same transport corridor were reviewed to ensure connectivity remained a priority. One option was rejected as it bordered the Al Badi neighbourhood, in order to preserve residential tranquillity.
The selected site near the Emirates–Al Dhaid–Khorfakkan roads was chosen for its strategic advantages. Moreover, the location allows for a rear exit, which is expected to improve traffic flow and accessibility during major events.
Expanded events capacity and future mobility
The new centre is designed to host a wide range of cultural and international events beyond the Sharjah International Book Fair. Meanwhile, Expo Centre Sharjah will continue to operate as a hub for commercial exhibitions and maintain its existing calendar. Several events, including the Xposure International Photography Festival, have already transitioned to the new venue, with additional exhibitions planned as part of a phased shift.
Sheikh Dr Sultan also addressed traffic arrangements during the book fair’s current hosting at Expo Centre Sharjah in Al Taawun. Measures are being implemented to ensure smoother traffic movement, aligned with broader initiatives to enhance road connectivity and reduce congestion. Furthermore, plans are in place for a future train station near the Al Khulafa Al Rashideen crossroads on Al Wahda Street, which is expected to strengthen mobility and accessibility across the district.
