Workers across the UAE can already look ahead to the first official break of 2026, as Thursday, 1 January has been confirmed as a nationwide holiday to mark the New Year. The announcement comes shortly after citizens and residents enjoyed the final long weekend of 2025 in celebration of Eid Al Etihad.
Short Wait After the Final 2025 Holiday
Even though the last public holiday of the year has just passed, the next one is only weeks away. New Year’s Day is recognised as an official holiday for both the public and private sectors, giving everyone a shorter wait before the first extended break of the new year. Since 1 January 2026 falls on a Thursday, many workers will naturally enjoy a longer weekend.
Public Holiday Rules for the New Year
Under Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024, the Gregorian New Year is designated as a day off for employees across the country. Additionally, the legislation notes that the Cabinet has the authority to move public holidays to the start or end of the week. This flexibility allows the government to create longer breaks when a holiday is close to a weekend, offering residents more time to rest or travel.
